Working with Wikis

Workshop Examples
1. As an online space for committees to work collaboratively. For example, this wiki is used by the Travis Unified School District for revising the district's technology plan.
2. As a place for students to work collaboratively. For example, this wiki is used by Canadian AP Calculus students.
3. For online projects such as flatplanet.
4. As a collaborative teaching and learning tool such as Wikids.
5. pbwiki: Tool used to build this wiki.

Discuss the ideas that have been presented about wikis. Choose a typist who will summarize team responses as you report out.

Questions:

1. How can wikis be used to enrich academic content? Wikis can be used to enrich academics by making the content real-world and relevant.  It gives immediate feedback to the students which makes it more engaging.  It could be used for group projects, a "what you missed in class today" page for absent students, providing opportunities for self-evaluation, reflection, reviewing previously covered content as a study guide, and a  source for discussion topics.

2. How can wikis be used to engage staff and students? Staff and student can get immediate feedback.  It is a great tool for working collaboratively.  You could network with other classrooms making cross-curricluar work easier and interesting.  It breaks through time, space, and cultural barriers.

3. What social, legal, or ethical issues might arise with use of wikis? Some parents may object to their children having such unrestricted access to computers/internet.Copyright/plagiarism issues may arise.  Also, with almost anyone having acces  to wikis there is a danger of kids being exposed to inappropriate material that the teacher has not been able to screen or protect the students from seeing.

3. The Guerrilla Season Book blog (8th grade).
4. AP Calculus 2006-07 blog (high school).
5. Blogger.com: Tool for creating a blog.

Discuss the ideas that have been presented about blogs. Choose a typist who will summarize team responses as you report out.

Questions:

1. How can blogs be used to enrich academic?

A blog can more easily be monitored than a wiki. For example, a student cannot change but only add to or respond the content of the text. This is an excellent media for communication with parents and other community members. Blogs can be used as a place for cummulative responses to a common project.

2. How can blogs be used to engage staff and students? Similarly to wiki. It's 'talking' w/o  vocalizing.

3. What social, legal, or ethical issues might arise with use of blogs? (Type answer here.)

Slander, libel, copyright problems....also, this technology is not equally available to ALL schools and students.

Questions:

1. How can podcasts be used to enrich academic? Helping students with pronunciation. Instead of typing...record homework assignments, lectures, could be class discussions. Download historical artifacts, speeches, etc.

2. How can podcasts be used to engage staff and students? Verbal learning styles. Kids like multimedia opportunities. A way to connect with parents and the community.

3. What social, legal, or ethical issues might arise with use of podcasts? TIME constraints...some ways to do this are faster and old school (tape recorders, textbook supplementals). Licensure issues.

Webtop Applications

Workshop Examples
1. Google Docs: Web-based word processing
2. Google Spreadsheets: Web-based spreadsheet

Discuss the ideas that have been presented about web-top applications. Choose a typist who will summarize team responses as you report out.

Questions:

1. How can webtop applications be used to enrich academic? ( No more "the dog ate my homework" or "I can't word process on my computer."  This would be a great tool for the writing process, especially revision.  It would also be good for group projects that need to be typed up.  Good for cooperative learning. )

2. How can webtop applications be used to engage staff and students? ( Engaging students by allowing everyone a chance to use these programs.  Again, this is on-line and therefore "cool" to kids, and adults.  )

3. What social, legal, or ethical issues might arise with use of webtop applications? ( Once again, it is the parents that don't want their children having on-line access that will cause trouble and alos not everyone has a computer at home or easy access to a computer.  But this application in particular lends itself to easy cheating, copying of others' homework, sharing of homework.  Also, how reliable is this technology?  The kinds of problems that could arise from technical problems and ethical problems might not make it worth it. )
