Working with Wikis

 

 

Workshop Examples
1. As an online space for committees to work collaboratively. For example, this wiki is used by the Travis Unified School District for revising the district's technology plan.
2. As a place for students to work collaboratively. For example, this wiki is used by Canadian AP Calculus students.

Questions:

- good place to compile discussion

- good place to keep group research for projects

- writing for each other - more invested in their project

- tie school and home together: education can be fun!

- replaces traditional poster board project and it shared with the whole world

 

2. How can wikis be used to engage staff and students? (List answers here.)

 - using technology that students use at home

- time-saver for staff

- communication is immediate and FREE

- prolong discussions after staff meetings, etc.

- share the labor for a school website...saves time, keeps it more updated

 

3. What social, legal, or ethical issues might arise with use of wikis? (Type answer here.)

- confidentiality

- kid's pictures

- students vandalising others' pages

- a good opportunity to teach ethics , social skills, and legal issues involved with using the Internet

- teachers would have to really check on site to make sure "bad stuff" doesn't get posted

- opinions posted not always of the school
