NETS for Teachers

National Education Technology Standards Activity

In order to insure that students have access to technology-supported instruction that will make a difference, teachers need to develop their skills in developing and implementing effective activities that incorporate various technologies. Think about ways teachers in your school or district use technology to support instruction.

Read the refreshed NETS for Teachers handout. How do the NETS for Teachers and the Framework for 21st Century Learning support student achievement? How would implementation of these standards impact your school improvement plan? What positive outcomes do you predict for teachers? What challenges might teachers face? How can you help teachers sustain effective use of technology as a tool for instruction?

Use the space below to jot down your ideas and then share them with your team. After your discussion, revisit your answers and make them as thorough and complete as possible in the given time.

1. How do the NETS for Teachers and the framework support student achievement? NETS-T along with the 21st Century Learning framework define what we are accountable for and helps to develop a roadmap to success.

2. How would implementation of these standards and framework impact your school improvement plan? NETS-T and the framework, implemented together, should provide guidelines for using technical tools that would show growth in the school improvement goals.  Both the framework and NETS-T serve as a great professional devleopment planning tool.

3. What positive outcomes do you predict for teachers? Teachers who create student-centered, engaging lessons that hold students' interest.  Students will become 21st century learners by participating in collaborative environment.

4. What challenges might teachers face? Teachers are reluctant to give up the role of Teacher and move towards the role of Facilitator.  Teachers may be intimadated by students who are digital natives.

5. How can innovations based on use of the NETS and the 21st century framework be sustained over time? As we move from teachers teaching students to become teachers, we all need to embrace the role of lifelong learners.  Using the NETS-T and the framework, we will transition into the model of learners leading learners.
