NETS for Students

National Education Technology Standards Activity

Think of a school-age child or young adult you know. What kind of school experience has this student had so far? Is s/he successful academically? What kinds of challenges does s/he face?

Now read the NETS for Students handout. How would technology-supported instruction based on these standards impact this student? What positive results would you predict? What challenges might arise? How do these standards align with the 21st century framework? How can use of the NETS and Framework be sustained over time?

Use the space below to jot down your ideas and then share them with your team. After your discussion, revisit your answers and make them as thorough and complete as possible in the given time.

1. How can instruction that is technology-supported and based on these standards and the framework impact students? It would give them the skills and tools necessary to make appropriate decisions in a digital world. There's an opportunity for these students to be better prepared for a higher level of study or work environment because they have achieved a mental framework that allows them to apply the skills necessary.

2. What positive results would you predict? It makes learning more relevant, authentic, and meaningful. It focuses on skills, not on specific tools that may change over time. Along with the framework, they contribute to a balanced lifestyle and global understanding.

3. What challenges might arise? Deciding how wide-open and when to open access to others within schools versus the freedom experienced outside of school is a major issue.  At what age is it appropriate to give students freedom to have complete access and when will they have acquired the 21st skills necessary to use technology responsibly.

4. How do these standards align with the 21st century framework? They are dovetailed into part of the foundation of the framework and align to the skills deemed necessary in the framework.

5. How can innovations based on use of the NETS and the 21st century framework be sustained over time? Developing a technology plan that includes the following elements: curriculum (a. intended learning, b.assessment, c. instruction and methodology), infrastructure (hardware, software, connections, etc.), professional development, and a technology committee comprised of administrators, teachers, and technology personnel.
